I'm going to be looking at the film industry the film industry is still one of the most dominant in the creative media industry
A1 Job Roles in the media sector
Producers are the main overseer's of the production of a film they can usually be employed by the production and can remain exclusive to that company or they can be individual producers working on there own producers are usually the people who allocate the roles whether this be choosing the director, editing, they also have a big part in the financial side of the film producers are crucial to the film industry as they are people who keep everything in check and makes sure everything is running smoothly without producers the film industry would be very different and harder.
Directors are the bosses of a films art and drama aspect they usually visualize the script and are able to take it from paper and make it on the screen with immense detail they are great at working in teams and coordinate the cast and crew professionally. Directors have a big influence on choosing actors and crew members such as cinematographers or editors the directors job role is a crucial one as they are a main factor of getting the project finished without them creating films would be much harder.
Camera operators Aka "Cameramen/Women" as it says in the name are the main creators when it comes to camera work they are responsible for choosing shots and camera locations and movement they usually have film or digital cameras and are instructed by the director on what to do. There responsibilities other than shot deciding is assembling and setting up the equipment for use, planning and rehearsing scenes and being able to follow directions quickly and efficiently if a camera doesn't operator cannot perform these tasks it can have a negative impact in production whether this he delays or a poorer quality product.
Scriptwriters or more commonly knows as a screenwriter is a writer in the film and TV industry they are known for creating the original idea for a film or for tweaking an existing idea to either make it more interesting or make it fit the production style better. A good screenwriter will know what they want and also be confident they will have to be good at communicating and persuasive to get the story sold.
Set designers are creators of the sets in the movies it's their main responsibility to ask other members of the crew like directors and costume designers what their preference is on the set for the scene to make it look accurate for example having a space ship interior for a sci fi film or a saloon for a western. A set designer also has to make sure that his or her's set looks real enough to transport the viewer out of the real world and into the world of the film.
Location manager, the location manager handles the job of finding locations to film in this can either be scouting themselves or hiring additional people or companies to do the scouting. They need to think of financial and reality of the location thinking of the cost and permits and informing residents or the public of the shoot. The location manager handles the entire management team so if anyone in that department has an issue they go to the location manager.
A2 Recruitment in the media sector
In the film industry there are many ways that employees are found word of mouth and social media are two of the most common.
Word of mouth in film there's nothing better than to get a recommendation from another creator this shows that you have some respect and if others are willing to vouch for you it show that you can be trusted in the industry obviously the higher the person recommending you the better for example if someone like Spielberg mentioned your name it would guarantee a job for you as Spielberg is known as one of the best filmmakers of all time.
Social media, with social media being a dominant platform on the internet and it's only increasing in size the film business has taken advantage of this and decided to use it as possible way to look for new talent social media is a great way to advertise yourself, as a creator can put there work online allowing millions of people to view celebrities in other industries have done this and it has been successful. Looking at the size of social medias popularity maybe using it will be the future of advertising and recruitment in the media/film industry.
Personal websites are another way to promote yourself and get your projects out into the open, by making a personal website and putting your work onto it again like social media your creating show reel for possibly millions of people to view your work and this increases the possibility of the chance getting seen by a studio and maybe recruited for a project they think is ideal for your skill set.
National press. National press is another way to get your work out into the open the best way to get the attention of the press would be for example to enter your movie into a film festival and have it premiere there as there is usually sometype of journalist there covering the event so this is way to get other people to see your film. When it comes from a popular news sourxe it's even better as many people respect and pay attention to that specific program or show.
Then there trade press starting film campaigns and broadcasting to people that's another way for employment, employment websites are another however it's unlikely that they will be any big opportunities on these.
A3 Contracts of employment
There are many types of employment contracts in the film industry some more common than others.
Freelance and self employment
Funding. Funding is the most common contact of employment in the film industry as most creators either have to get money themselves to make their project or its possibly to get funding by donations for example platforms like Kickstarter or Patreon where people can donate to things they seem to be interested in contributors will get rewards for doing this can be a copy of the film or meet the cast or possibly an autograph. Public funding of course isn't the only way to get funding for a movie there are also private companies like the bfi who want to get young British film director and filmmakers more recognition so there is a chance If they like your film they will fund you. Private funding is always an option however it's very risk as you are taking a massive chance and it's possible that you could pile a ton of debt on yourself it is possible for it to pay off and the film you create becomes a success however again this is a huge risk.
Self promotion it's possible for filmmakers to self promote themselves through entering film festival Using social media or by asking other filmmakers or content creators to shout them out.
Voluntary. Doing voluntary work is also a way into the film industry it's possible to get a job in a studio however you won't be getting paid for you work there this is also known as an internship it's most common to get these while studying at university for example you can however still apply for these. There are other voluntary work you can do in the film industry a project may need some extras for the movie or an extra hand to help out the crew these are typically common in student films or low budget productions as the more help these productions can get without having to pay helps them out massively.
Casual labor. Casual labor is quite common in the film industry as it's mostly used for certain crew members who aren't needed everyday for example if there was a shot being filmed from a helicopter the company would need to hire a pilot who could fly a helicopter however another day they might not need to film outside and may be in the studio in this case it would be pointless having a pilot sitting around the studio when they can't be used so they would just pay them for the day and let them go and call them back up if they need them again.
Casual labor can also be applied to extras as some extras will only be needed for a day's worth of shooting and they will be paid for that day then let go sometimes with casual labor they aren't even needed for the full day and they will be let go after a few hours. This goes for crew members like assistant directors and some designers they can be used for a few days or a few hours.
Part time and full time contacts. Full time and part time contracts are quite uncommon in the film industry it's more of a TV thing as companies usually use different Directors and crew for different projects in the film industry so for example they might one specific director to make one film and then for the sequel hire a completely different director.
